Details

Safer than using a shop vac or hosehold vacuum; every component of the Cougar Ash Vacuum is designed for safety. Rather than hot embers sitting inside a paper filter bag, surrounded by flammable household debris, the ashes will be held in the fireproof 3 gallon capacity canister. Fine ash particles will not be spread though out you home with the advanced dual filtration system. The first filter is flame retardant for precautionary reasons. The second filter traps sub-micron particles (ash) and has a special snap spring assembly allowing for easier cleaning. You can even clean the filters without opening the canister so no ash has a chance to escape. All you do it jiggle the agitator rod on the lid to knock ash off the filters. The ash vacuums canister stays closed.

The Cougar Quiet Ash Vac is similar to the Cheetah Ash Vac but a bit quieter. It can suck up warm and cold ashes! Using a fire-resistant hose and a specially designed filtering system for ash, the Ash Vac solves the problem of removing ash from wood burning stoves and fireplaces safely.

Product Note: This vacuum is meant for cool and warm ashes only; it cannot be used to pick up embers. Doing so will result in damage to the unit.

What you can safely vacuum

We advise that you always allow enough time for all embers to completely cool off and we offer these guidelines to give you a feel for how fire resistant our fabric filters are.

What we refer as a "firefly" is unlikely to burn a hole in our filter. A firefly is like the tiny spark that floats up out of a fireplace, and it glows for no longer than a firefly, about a second, before it burns out.

What we refer to as a "cigarette" could potentially burn a hole in our filter. It is a piece/chunk of partially burned fuel (wood or pellet) that has a red hot glowing ember attached, much like a cigarette. These carry enough fuel with them, that, if lodged against the filter, with swirling air, could heat up and damage the filter.

If you need to clean a pellet stove while the contents in the pot still seem warm, the best way to ensure your AshVac only picks up only ash, and not large hot embers, is to rest the nozzle at an angle directly on the bottom of the pot, and then move it around so it sucks fine ash particles from the bottom of the pile. The narrow opening between the pot floor and nozzle allows ash through, but blocks larger material, including hot embers that are large enough to be problematic.

We do recommend changing the Ash Vacuum filters once a season. They cannot be washed because they have been treated with a Teflon finish. If you wash them they will get sticky. You can clean the filters after each use by removing the rod cover and shaking the shaker basket by grasping the metal rod sticking up out of the lid from side to side. This is just done if you are losing suction but your canister is not full of ash yet.

Overpriced, overrated.

Not sure why all the glowing reviews of this ash vac. It has obvious design flaws...the hose port is plastic and prone to warpage/burn-thru (it happened to me within the first week), as well as it being mounted so low on the can you can really only accumulate a few inches of ash before the suction stops altogether and needs emptied. It's equipped with a metal hose, yet all 'ash' travels through a plastic port attached to a metal can. Why not make the port metal/aluminum/brass/stainless as well??
Also, the hose continually falls off despite the barbs that should keep it in place. I put tape around it to secure it because it became such a nuisance. The only positive is it does contain the dust that would otherwise circulate throughout the house.
Loveless CS is quick to respond and accommodating to questions/problems, but this ash vac warrants no accolades. I purchased based solely on the positive reviews and wanted a dustless vacuum for my fireplace insert.
Bottom line: other models can be had for the half the price without the inherit design setbacks.

Was using my shop vac to clean my pellet stove. Not a good thing to do, kept cloging and went through many filters. Received the Cougar for xmas and it is just what was needed. No cloging and the filters will last longer with the shaker. Some reviews have indicated that it is noisy. Guess what folks, it's a vacuum.
I would recommend this vac to anyone with a pellet stove.

It works well in picking up the ash outside the fireplace. I am hesitant to use it to remove ash from within the fireplace while the fire is burning-as my husband want to do. He thinks the filter gets bogged down easily. I bought it after he burned up 2 regular vacuum sweeper bags. One still smells like smoke. At least the Ash Vac hasn't burned.

Exactly what is needed when you use a pellet stove as your major source of heat and its cold outside. You don't want your stove to be down too long but it needs to be cleaned. Twice I've gotten some coals in the vac without any problem whatsoever. Very satisfied.

Given as a gift to my son to use on his wood pellet stove - He called the first time he used it, and I quote - Mom, the vacuum works great! It has great suction, and there's absolutely no ash dust expelled back into the room! Thanks for getting it!.
