Product Details

The Cougar is designed with safety in mind. It features a steel nozzle with a five-foot flame-resistant hose and a fireproof three-gallon steel chamber. The patented filter system uses fire-resistant fabric rated up to 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit, and the remaining parts are all made out of thermo-plastics to withstand high temperatures.

The patented filtration system of the Cougar Quiet Ash Vac creates the cleanest possible removal of ash. The Cougar uses a filter system consisting of two filters. The dual filters capture the finest ash particles to keep your house clean and smelling fresh. The first filter is flame retardant for precautionary reasons. The second filter traps sub-micron particles (ash) and has a special snap spring assembly allowing for easier cleaning. The Cougar's filters can be cleaned without removing them from the vacuum, eliminating any potential mess. For a quick dust-off, simply remove the brass cap from the lid and jiggle the agitator rod from side to side to shake the filters and make ash particles fall off. After you have vacuumed up 60 to 80 gallons of ash, your Cougar will be ready for a thorough cleaning. Just detach and vacuum the secondary and primary filters to clean them.

The Cougar Quiet Ash Vacuum features a cold-rolled steel canister that will hold up to three gallons of ash. This fireproof canister safely contains your ashes without bags, so you'll never need to worry about expensive and annoying replacements. Just remove the canister's lid when it's time to empty your ashes. The powerful, six-amp electric motor, can suck up ash quickly and easily. What's more, specially designed motor housing makes operation as quiet as can be. In fact, the Cougar is the cadillac of ash vacuums, operating with 60% less noise than the other ash vacuums. To help speed up ash removal, the Cougar's crimped steel nozzle and 5' flame-resistant hose is designed to quickly pick up ash and leave larger debris behind--for burning at a later time. To use, just place the vacuum nozzle directly on the hearth and swipe it in a circular motion. Ash will flow smoothly through the hose without clogging.

Product Note: This vacuum is meant for cool and warm ashes only; it cannot be used to pick up embers. Doing so will result in damage to the unit.

NOTE: Never use a household, or shop vacuum to clean a fireplace, because warm embers can be hidden under ash, which acts like an insulator and can keep embers hot for days after you think the fire is out. The combination of swirling air and debris inside a flammable paper bag filter is an extremely dangerous fire hazard.

What you can safely vacuum

We advise that you always allow enough time for all embers to completely die and cool off, and offer these guidelines to give you a feel for how fire resistant our fabric filters are.

What we refer as a "firefly" is unlikely to burn a hole in our filter. A firefly is like the tiny spark that floats up out of a fireplace, and it glows for no longer than a firefly, about a second, before it burns out.

What we refer to as a "cigarette" could potentially burn a hole in our filter. It is a piece/chunk of partially burned fuel (wood or pellet) that has a red hot glowing ember attached, much like a cigarette. These carry enough fuel with them, that, if lodged against the filter, with swirling air, could heat up and damage the filter.

If you need to clean a pellet stove while the contents in the pot still seem warm, the best way to ensure your AshVac only picks up only ash, and not large hot embers, is to rest the nozzle at an angle directly on the bottom of the pot, and then move it around so it sucks fine ash particles from the bottom of the pile. The narrow opening between the pot floor and nozzle allows ash through, but blocks larger material, including hot embers that are large enough to be problematic.

We do recommend changing the Ash Vacuum filters once a season. They cannot be washed because they have been treated with a Teflon finish. If you wash them they will get sticky. You can clean the filters after each use by removing the rod cover and shaking the shaker basket by grasping the metal rod sticking up out of the lid from side to side. This is just done if you are losing suction but your canister is not full of ash yet.
