What is a Fireplace Insert?
Fireplace inserts are basically a wood stove (or pellet stove, gas
stove, or electric) designed to fit into an existing masonry fireplace or
equalivent (old style Heatilator is ok). A firpelace insert cannot be put
into a vent-free fireplace, direct-vent fireplace or similar. A good fireplace
insert can actually heat a large portion of your home or all of it depending on
the layout, insulation, windows, and size of the fireplace insert. Most
masonry fireplaces are ineffecient and actually suck heat out of your home.
How does a Fireplace Insert work? A fireplace insert
is a heat exchanger. A fire burns in the firebox (or heating element on electric fireplace inserts) which heats up the
surrounding metal walls and either produces heat in the form of radiant heat or
more commonly convection heat using a fan or blower. By installing a
fireplace insert you will transform an inefficient fireplace into an efficient
way to heat your home.
