This cast iron ash dump has outside air intake controlled by sliding shutter. Controls outside air source from inside the fireplace. Keeps the cold air out when not in use. Outside air would typically come from the ash dump cavity through a chimney clean out door. Inside lip 4.5" x 8 3/4" and the outside dimensions are 5 3/8 " x 9 3/4".

Have not installed the vented ash dump yet, but just know it will be great. Beats having to open and try to keep open the other type. It is made of quality material and should last another 30 years at least!
Does a very nice job of passively moving air into the fire underneath and with blocking the cold air when not in use. Keeps the embers white hot. Hasn't warped like most cast iron doors do. Sliding vent does jam up with ashes and has to be swept off, but that is not unexpected. Highly recommended.
Worked great. I used it to get fresh air from outside. Put a flexible vent pipe from my ash door in my basement to outside fresh air. Now I don't suck the heat from my house.
