- I have some creosote (hard, black, shiny, thick) buildup directly above my fireplace on the OUTSIDE stones facing the living room. I've tried to remove it with masonry cleaners (several brands!), TSP, acetone and muriatic acid...none of them has worked.
- Rutland's Brick & Stone Cleaner is a safe concentrated cleaner to remove smoke residue, soot, and creosote from masonry surfaces. The item number is 5RU-83-6. Liberally spray dampened area with Brick & Stone Cleaner. Clean off any overspray on metal and glass right away. Will not harm metal and glass, but it will be difficult to remove after drying. Scrub brick and stone vigorously with wet non-metallic brush to get deep into pores. DO NOT LET AREA DRY, until thoroughly rinsed with clean water. Remove all traces of cleaner before it dries. Repeat the process if necessary. If using outdoors, use care to protect area vegetation. For persistent dark stains, use peroxide mixed with small amount of white vinegar as a cleaning agen
