  • I have a two story house and want to put a heat exchanger in the pipe as it goes up thru the second floor. Now the only way the heat goes up is thru the staircase. Is a heat exchanger going to work mounted about 12 feet above the wood stove? If power goes out what will happen to this unit? How far from a wall does the heat exchanger have to be? Can I buy a heat exchanger that gives me the option of not using it when the wood stove is on in case of power failure?
  • This heat exchanger is designed to install into stove pipe and not class A chimney pipe. I presume you have class A chimney pipe installed once you reach the ceiling in the lower level so this wouldn't install safely if that is the case and I don't recommend trying that. A better option is adding the heat exchanger in the lower level and then adding some floor vents between the lower and upper floors. We have a few options here for Floor Vents. In regards to the rest of your questions; If power goes out the fan will not work on the heat exchanger therefore it won't produce nearly the heat it would with the fan running. The motor shouldn't overheat. The heat exchanger has to be 18" from a combustible surface. This can be r with proper wall protection. You can leave the heat exchanger off and still use the wood stove but do not over-fire the stove. Never allow the exchanger tubes to glow red hot. A great option to have is a small portable generator. The small ones use gasoline sparingly and will power the wood stove fan and exchanger fan.....Robert
