The Colonial wood burning fireplace insert is an air-tight, high efficiency, 3/16" reinforced plate steel stove that continuously produces maximum heat output. Boasting 69,600 BTU's per hour, and an efficiency rating of 76%.

The colonial is designed to fit a minumum fireplace opening of 23" H x 29" W x 14" D

Colonial Insert Airflow

This insert is designed to get the most efficient transfer of heat energy from the wood fuel and radiate it into your living environment. The fire box introduces combustion air through three sources; (1) Immediately beneath the door opening below the window is a Lower Primary Air Orifice (LPAO), (2) The door air inlet control brings air into the firebox and controls the rate of burn (and the amount of heat the insert radiates), (3) The secondary air tubes at the top of the firebox are designed to ignite the combustion gases (smoke) given off by the burning wood and increases the efficiency of the insert and reduces chimney emissions.

The Colonial has a continuous burn time of up to 8 hours on a single load of hardwood, accepts logs up to 18" long and will heat up to 1800 square feet of space. The Colonial also includes a variable speed (125 CFM) blower to allow you to move more of that warm air into the room. Perfect for heating your Great Room or open living area.

The heavy duty all cast iron door features a large 16.5" x 9", "air-washed" ceramic galss window, which allows an incredible view of the fire. What an air wash system does is consistently draws air from the top of the stove down past the ceramic glass window. This effectively prevents the tar and soot that would normally build up, restricting your view and making maintenance a chore.

The inside of the Colonial is lined with firebricks for even greater burning efficiency. The purpose of the firebrick is multifaceted:

  • It helps to insulate the stove so that there is less unintended heat loss from the unit, allowing the heat to be distributed as desired.
  • Firebricks hold up well to extreme temperature changes and possess low thermal conductivity making them an excellent choice for aiding in the efficiency and longevity of your stove.
  • Gives the stove an aesthetically pleasing appearance while not in operation.

In short, a firebrick-lined firebox is key for burning efficiency.

The firebox itself measures 20.5" wide x 12" deep and is capable of holding logs up to 18" in length. Because of the efficiency qualities, the Colonial can maintain a burn time of up to 8 hours on one load!

Note: An 8 hour burn time is dependent upon certain variables such as the quality of the fuel source and the amount of fuel (wood) used.

The large "hearth surround" (31" x 44") with pewter trim makes the Colonial fireplace insert a beautiful addition to any living space.

Floor protection must be non-combustible material extending 24" in front and 6" on each side.

*This unit meets the State of Washington's regulations for low emissions.

May NOT be installed in mobile homes, manufactured homes, trailers or tents. (No Exceptions)

Reviews????

I'm not having the experience of other reviewers. I question the BTU rating compared to the claim of an eight hour burn. My experience is that it is not possible to have both. You either get a low heat long burn or a high heat short burn. And, in no case will you get an actual 8 hour-heat-providing burn.

As to the air wash on the door. The diagram showing the air flow on the website is not possible. The burn air gets to the flue by going up the front of the firebox right against the back of the door. How would cold air come down over the door when hot air is going up and out at the same place???? If I do long burns - 3+ hours max making decent heat and having just a pile of coals at the end - the door glass gets coated with black, and I'm using cured oak. It will stay clean if I do 2 hour hot burns, which requires adding wood every two hours. The firebox is so small, wood has to be split smaller, and I have NEVER been able to get enough wood in there to last 8 hours. That advertised burn time is a flagrant lie. It will burn and then smolder for 8 hours, but it will not "burn" and make decent heat for 8 hours. This isn't a serious heating device, but more of a decorative warming atmosphere provider.

My other stove, at the other end of the house, will put you out of the room it provides so much heat, and it WILL make heat for 8 hours, and provide enough heat that it goes up the stairs and heats the upstairs too (2300+ square foot 2 story colonial). The Colonial fan is noisy, and at 125 cfm, inefficient. You can get the same flow by taking the fan off the heater and using gravity and a ceiling fan. I have to use two other fans to get the heat around the downstairs - forget the upstairs.

I always felt Vogelzang was a quality company that offered real wood heating appliances. I do not feel that way now, and would not buy another of their misrepresented products. This stove is perfect for a den, eat in kitchen/den, or other smaller area, but whole house heat is beyond its capability. Don't be fooled by the advertised specs. It's more of a recreational item than a serious stove. I feel that you folks that have left glowing reviews are still in the honeymoon period. Wait till it really gets cold.

Robert's Comments; I agree that it's about impossible to get the full BTU output for 8 hours. Usually people need to heat all night and hope for coals in the morning while using the furnace for backup. The size of the firebox needs to be smaller to meet the EPA regulations and to fit in a fireplace the overall unit needs to be smaller. Inserts typically under-perform freestanding wood stoves but are 1000 times more efficient than a regular fireplace and you don't need to spend a fortune on a chimney system. Most people are happy with the unit and we do offer our 30 day unconditional return on this item even if you use it. If you're that unhappy with the unit then return it if you're within the 30 day time frame.

positive

Ive been heating with wood for over 50 years with Vermont Castings the Defiant Vigilant and Woodstock soapstone [which is very good} I have a fireplace that even with the glass doors is still very drafty I bought this stove for the effiency of stopping the drafts and cause it looks nice I didn't really expect more than that cause of the lower price I installed the liner myself ,pretty easy and after a few small fires I started using it I;m very impressed by this stove it heats mt 1200 square foot house easily with the blower going. I like this more than the expensive stoves and the fire really burns nice inside the stove. This is the first review I;ve ever written about anything so I am really am impressed

great unit

We have had this unit going on 3 seasons now and it is great. no issues. Throws off lots of heat and is easy to clean. If you have a basement or lower level den that is chilly in the winter this is a great way to warm it up and add value to your home.

This unit keeps our oil furnace from running which means savings! It is smaller than I thought and we have to resplit some of our logs to fit. Our installer found it easy to install. The surround is not attatched to the fireplace so we had our installer add insulation to keep it from rattling when the furnace came on. Overall, we are very pleased with this insert.

We are well satisfied with the insert. It looks good and does a good job of heating our 1300 sq ft home. The only real complaint that I had with the product was some of the instructions were not very detailed and the faceplate and blower did not have the screws for assembly included in the box.

I purchased the Colonial Wood stove in early November 2009 and have heated out 1800 sq/ft house this winter using only the stove. The stove has had the ability to heat the house to 70 degress in Eastern Long Island, NY using only seasoned firewood.
Initially, the stoves blower was quite noisy and one baffle had come loose. All this was remedied by calling Vogelzang direct. Within a day, the replacement parts had arrived, free of charge. Some of the best customer service I have ever received in my 43 years on this planet.
All in all, the stove performs great. I find the firebox to be a little small to really pack it for over night. But have learn the sweet spot, by closing the damper down till the logs burn slow and hot . leaving a nice bed of coals for that first morning log. Highly recommend this unit for it's cost, and installation ease.

    • why not manufactured home? mine was built in 2000 and has a fireplace in it
    • Steve, This stove is not approve for mobile home use because it does not meet the required qualifications. Please read the following to understand why only certain wood stoves are approved for use in mobile homes; "Before a wood stove may be installed in a mobile home, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) requires that specific regulations be satisfied. First, the stove model must have been tested by a HUD-approved laboratory and listed for use in mobile homes. A metal tag permanently fastened to the rear of the appliance indicates the name of the testing facility and the stove's compliance with HUD Standard UM-84. Second, a tested and listed prefabricated chimney system—connected directly to the stove and installed properly—must be used. Third, a hard ducting system for bringing outside combustion air directly to the stove's air inlet is required. And finally, some means of securing the stove to the floor of the home is called for."

    • my house was built in 1890 i don't have a flu can i still use this insert/colonial
    • Thank you for your question. The inserts will need a chase or masonry flue to run the liner up. We also recommend to insulate the liner.

  • From Ben at 11/15/12 7:26 PM
    • Can we just run the 6" pipe to the damper? The damper is 4" wide x 16" long.

Also, we have a heatilator-style firebox that slopes from 21" deep (at the base) to 13" deep (at the top)... the damper is just inside the front wall of the fireplace. Will this model work? If not, do you reccommend another?
    • Thank you for your question. With wood burning inserts the manufacture recommends that liner is ran from the back of the stove to the top of the flue opening. We also recommend insulating this liner to keep a good draft. The damper will need to be removed to run the liner through properly. The liner comes in a kit depending on the length of your flue and also includes the top plate, cap and appliance adapter.

    • Is this made to fit in a metal type firebox that has an 8" pipe? If so I do understand that the 6" liner kit will need to be installed.
    • This unit can be installed in a zero-clearance fireplace with an 8" flue and would need a 6" liner installed as well.....Robert

  • From Neal at 11/8/12 3:13 PM
    • I live in Minnesota and was hoping to better utilize my fireplace with something like this to provide additional heat for my house and try to lower my natural gas bills in the winter. My furnace is rated at 60,000 Btu/hr input and my house is a basement and upstairs with a total of 1900 square feet. Can any input be provided as to how well something like this could heat my house, meaning have others in a colder climate stated they have had some savings on their gas bills? My house is insulated fairly well and not drafty if that helps.

      Thanks,
    • I have used a fireplace insert to heat my previous home which was a poorly insulated 1600 sq. ft. home with bad windows. My home was a ranch which isn't ideal since the home is long versus more vertical. If the fireplace in your home is on the main floor don't expect to heat the basement. If your fireplace is in the basement then you could possibly heat the whole home or at a minimum in either situation you could set your furnace back and use the fireplace insert for the main heat source. My daughter lives in Michigan (similar climate) and heats her entire home with a freestanding wood stove. The home is a 2 story 2300 sq. ft. home with good windows, insulated well, and an open floor plan. All these factors weigh in when trying to figure how well a fireplace insert or wood stove will heat. The bottom line is that fireplace inserts have been used for more than 30 years to heat homes. Some heat the entire home while other homes may be more difficult to heat and even then you'll see a dramatic reduction in heating costs. They are a good investment....Robert
