not satisfied

This splitter does not perform as stated It does not split all logs up to 12' in diameter, sometimes not even 8-10" When I called for an explanation I was told it was for splitting seasoned wood. This is never mentioned in the ad. I called again about returning it.Not only was I told I would have to pay for the return shipping but also the shipping for the purchase shipping because I did not want the product which was not stated either. Do you know how much this thing weighs? So, not only does it not do what they say it does but you have to pay for shipping both ways. I would not deal with this company again.

Robert's Comment: Based on other reviews (44 to date) I'd have to say that the majority of people are happy with their purchase. For most homeowners this unit seems to be just enough. However, I prefer the more powerful 7 Ton WoodEze splitter as it is much more powerful and very heavily built and I like to tackle the big stuff. On the shipping costs I'd like to explain our side; 1) We ship out the log splitter at no additional charge. 2) We let you use the unit for 30 days and if dis-satisfied you can return it. No other company that I'm aware of allows this and requires the unit to be in "new" condition. 3) The one stipulation is we don't cover the outbound shipping cost nor the return shipping which is stated very clearly in our return policy. So I challenge you Spike to find a more fair policy on a similar product. These are great log splitters for the average homeowner and more. We get very few complaints or returns.

Perfect Choice

Has worked perfectly. Only a couple stubborn pieces it couldn't split, but has worked on bigger than recommended pieces beautifully. Very safe. Has saved so much time and labor. Only issue was packaging when shipped. Didn't stand a chance of making it intact. Two parts were damaged, but called customer service and the replacements were sent right away, and were easy to replace.

I forgot to give it 5 stars in a prior review!

I tried to buy a splitter at 2 of the big box stores. They don't stock them, strange since I live in a wooded area in PA and the majority burn wood to cut back on oil use. Could not order from them online either their websites just freeze up. So I called them and they said I would have to come to the store to place a special order. Glad they could not help me. For the same price of their splitter I got the woodeze, the stand, free shipping to my home and no tax. Out of the box it worked great even on some knots. The next day I installed the stand and it is very sturdy and makes splitting much easier on the back and knees. I would recommend this splitter, stand and NorthLineExpress.com. Thank you.

Good price, Works great!

Works great right out of the box. I Split oak maple and walnut. The woods behind my house are roughly 40 to 50 years old ( the average tree being closer to 20 or 30). So these aren't monster trees. But, I split the largest logs on my pile with ease. In fact, I split many logs that I previously had left laying in the woods because I didn't feel like pulling out the ax and maul. I will echo earlier comments about the box arriving really beat up but the splitter was in perfect shape. My wife likes and uses it to witch is good because she can be "hesitant" around machinery. But, not this machinery. We are very happy with it.

Great splitter on soft and dry woods

I got this to split my own firewood. It works great on soft and dry wood. It is a little tuff on the really hard wood that is a bit damp or wet. It is easy to use ans as soon as you let go of the switch it returns back to starting position for another log.

I have had troubles splitting the really hard woods like the red and white oak we have here in texas. Most of it worked great just the one with a lot of knots or v notched pieces. I guess I should of got the bigger one the 7 ton but I thought it would be enough power but I thought it would be enough for the little bit of splitting I do just for my family. I might have to spend more money and get the bigger 7 ton to split the hard woods. I have had it since thanksgiving 2012 and works great and used it a lot it looks very used LOL.

Outstanding Product

I purchase a cord of kiln dried wood every year. All of the wood is split however about half the cord needs splitting. Log splitter arrived a week or so after ordering unpacked it split 75 log
around 5 to 6 inches in diameter in 30 minutes or so. No problem so easy to use. Very happy. No more sledges mauls wedges.Although some reviews aren't so great, I think they my have needed a larger model. But if you need to split 6" logs this the model you need.

Love it!

I too am very impressed with this splitter. I was looking at other splitters that were 5 ton and was a little concerned about getting a ton less power. Well after doing some research I found out that this splitter had the same specs as far as power (amps) as the 5 ton splitter I was looking at so I decided to give it a try. Don't let its smaller size deceive you! I split about a face cord of wood the first time I really put this tool to the test and was impressed. The only time I had to try several times on a piece was on one of those real nasty stringy logs *those of you who have come across this type of wood know exactly what I'm talking about as you're shaking your head right meow* I was really surprised at how quiet this splitter is. I can easily run this tool and have a conversation with someone right next to me. I also like the fact that's quiet as I need to split wood later at night sometimes. My two youngest boys enjoy pushing the buttons as I help hold the log in place. I understand the safety aspect of having to use two hands to run it but would like to see the option to override that and have the lever that drives the ram also engage the motor. We are adults after all. My hand is large enough where I can just reach the ram lever with my pinky and the power button with my thumb thereby freeing my other hand to hold the piece of wood in place with a good set of gloves on.Without doing this many of the logs (especially if the ends are not cut straight) would annoyingly slide off the ram. I also recommend safety glasses (none worn by the gentlemen in the video) with your face this close to the wood. My only real complaint would be that the handle is made of plastic and not steel. Practically everything else on this machine is steel except the handle which of course I already broke. This device when used sits out in freezing temps during the winter months and a little plastic handle will break pretty easily if accidentally hit, apparently. I would have rated this splitter 5 stars across the board if it weren't for the plastic handle. Will have to find out how to order another so not a big deal but rather a suggestion for future splitters from this company. I have seen complaints regarding customers receiving their splitter and the box is all beat up. I guess the Fed Ex people took care of mine cuz the box was all intact. Fast shipping as well. Another amazing bonus is everything is ready to go right out of the box! The directions state you have to install the front leg supports but I was please to see this was already done. You open the box, pull out the splitter, loosen the bleed screw and plug er in. That's it, amazing!

Robert's Comment: We spent a little more on improved wheels (old ones broke in transit), and have spent more on better packaging to reduce shipment damage (won't find that on similar models). As for the handle; we do have those is stock if you need a replacement. We carry most of the replacement parts unlike most companies selling a similar unit. Glad you're happy with the unit. I think they're great too. And yes, safety glasses will be worn in the video and are highly recommended. Thanks for the testimonial!

Awesome

Bought this for Dad who lives out in the Ozark Countryside in Missouri. Lots and lots of Black oak trees. They own about 2.5 acres on a lake. There has been a blight moving down the hill killing about 1 tree a year, so there has been a decent supply of firewood each year for us to split. Unfortunately, we often did this by hand. Black oak is very hard to split. We typically use wedge and sledge splitting, although for little pieces axing is possible, until this Christmas. Dad opened this on Christmas morning and boy was he thrilled. We hooked it up and got to splitting about 10 logs. We started out with some smaller 12" or so logs. It split these without much grief. Then we tried a bigger one, about 20", a bit slower, but no real problems either. Then we tried a 20" piece with a lot of knots - jammed. Tried it again, still jammed. Put that piece aside and tried a clean 24" diameter log. The splitter creaked and squeaked a bit before ripping the 24" log in half! Impressive. Every single log we tried to split with this around 20" it tore with ease. I might not recommend doing a bunch of 24" logs, it might be hard on the frame. Also, good luck if you are doing large knotty wood, it will likely jam. We did have some smaller 12" knotty wood pieces, and while it did struggle it powered through them ripping the wood off around the knots. Our first test allowed us to process about and hours worth of 4 people's work in just 20 minutes with 1 person - Fantastic. Just a word of warning, watch out with odd shaped pieces; if the log slips the splitter might throw the piece. We had that a couple times.

One flaw, however, is that ours came with a broken wheel. I will be contacting the manufacturer for a replacement, which I understand is a simple process. I will post back if necessary. Overall, awesome for $240 shipped!

Very Impressed for a 4 ton splitter

Got this around 9-1-12. I split about 2 cords and all the wood (oak and maple) was on the green side and wet. I only had a problem with about 7 logs and they had knots in them. I was splitting some logs around 15" and bigger with no problem! Be careful when you buy a 100' extension cords as some of them drop to 13 amps you need the 15 amps. I used a 14 guage 50' and 25' together with no loss of power. Don't use less then 14 guage. Plan on buying the stand next year. You can't go wrong for the price. I was lucky with the box it came in, the bottom was open but it was held together with the 2 straps. They need to ship that in a stronger box. I wouldn't put 20 lbs in that box.

Just got this splitter and used it this past weekend. I was very impressed with the ease with which it split the logs. I pushed the envelope a bit on some bigger logs with pretty good success. Of course, some were too big, but I thought I'd try. Great baragain, too. Other websites had same product for $50 more, plus shipping.

I bought the Woodeze log splitter and table. I used the product and am pleased. It was received promptly and was well packaged. It worked to my satisfaction. I would recommend this product. The only problem I encountered was the first time I attempted to tighten the Bleed Screw.. .half of it broke off. I would recommend the manufacturer use a different type of material ...metal or hard rubber.

not good

watched the video of the dude splitting 12" plus logs and thought happy days, this unit looks great. bought it and just tried it for the 1st time, great at 6" logs or less, I had a load of 1year old totally dry live oak logs, live in florida, and this thing was pityfull over 6" diameter, the vid is misleading and whilst the unit feels solid and sturdy the motor is weak, i'm hoping they take it back, would gladly have paid more for something that can at least split a 12" diameter log, come on dudes, u looked so honest on the vid, pony up, sick of being ripped off. i'll be showing exactly what i said on youtube, i'm no bullsh....er. v pissed off.

Commentator Reply;
I am the dude in the video. I have used this logs splitter many times on a good hardwood like oak and beech with no trouble as I showed in the video. I think this unit is better suited for the occasional user and on smaller logs but I had no trouble splitting the logs I showed. Logs with knots are tough on this unit. This was not staged or set up to mislead anyone. Frankly I prefer the 7 ton unit which is quite a bit more powerful. However, we have sold hundreds of the 4 ton unit and have taken back less than 1%. So yes, if you're not happy we would take the unit back even though you have used it. I suggest you try the 7 ton and I think you'll be very happy. Please contact us for a return authorization.

Set it up on a strong table....checked the dip stick level....vented the system....and...SHAZAM...it works well beyond my expectations. Have screwed some chocks to the table to stabilize and elevated the front end to vent the oil.

The packaging however needs some improvement. The box arrived in shreds. This electric wood splitter works well. I've used it in the garage, behind my house, out a bit in the woods with 100' extension cord. I put it on my garden wagon and split right on that.

It's a bit slow when waiting for the ram to extend to the piece of wood being split. A little modification to put an removable extension on the ram would solve that problem. I've only had it for a few weeks so I haven't gotten modifications yet. But so far so good.

The on-line demonstration Northline did sold me on the WoodEze 4-Ton Splitter. I burn oak firewood, however when I received it, while the wood was already cut to size and split, it was a little too large to burn properly in my wood burning stove/fireplace. This splitter has allowed me to further split my logs and get a better burn in my fireplace. The splitter has lived up to its demonstration. I did purchase the stand along with it and strongly advise this purchase as well... it will save your back from having to stoop without it. I would urge Northline to request stronger packaging from their manufacture. I did receive a slightly damaged product... the box looked like it was rolled down Lombard Street in San Francisco before it arrived at my place, however Northline did replace it promptly and without recharging or crediting my account. My experience in communicating with their order desk was extremely pleasant. All in all, I am a happy camper with this product and dealing with Northline Express.

The log splitter is good for very dry, straight-grained rounds, but not for blue-stained, stringy or wet Jeffrey pine. Since I cut a lot of Jeffrey pine when it is green, & store it for 1 year before splitting it, it often hasn't completely dried. I'm experimenting now by splitting the rounds into halves with a larger splitter to dry them, & will see if the 4-ton handles the half-rounds better in another month. I like the fact that it's portable & has wheels, as I'd never be able to lift it. I use it on my waist-high deck, & roll it into my mudroom to store it. Having to use 2 hands to operate it makes positioning the rounds difficult.

This is a very convenient way to split wood for household not commercial purposes at a reasonable cost. It is quiet, no fumes and no gas motor to maintain already have enough of those!I also recommend buying the stand which brings the splitter up to working height - otherwise the operator will be bending over to operate - not desireable in my opinion.

Note that this is a light duty splitter and works fine and fast in that capacity. If you have some really large pieces to split, you will be better off with a heavy duty gas-operated model.

By the way, it weighs 100 lbs so moving it around on the wheels provided works well.

Nice machine. And good service from Northline Express, it arrived in 4 business days. One note about using extension cords, which is a caution in the product manual. This machine draws 15 amps so a significant votage drop can occur. I run it on a 50' AWG 10 then a 100' AWG 12 extension cord 150' total and it runs fine.

Questions on WoodEze 4-Ton Electric Log Splitter - LS56

Sort by Descending
  • From j. winkler at 10/9/12 9:34 AM
    • Can the 4 ton splitter be used with an extension cord and if yes what is maximum length of card.thanks
    • You can use an extension cord but we recommend a heavy duty cord (less electricity loss) and you should limit the length to 25 feet.
    • Do you find this question helpful?  Yes  No
  • From Diana N. at 10/13/12 2:12 AM
    • I just had 2 100 year old oaks cut a few weeks ago and have about a dozen more smaller trees to have cut yet. This is my first time splitting wood and I think the 4 ton should do the job for me. I saw in the reviews where an older woman was able to use it, so that reassured me that I probably could, too.

I know I'll need to cut down a lot of the larger rounds first with a chain saw before I can split them - the tree guy showed me how. How long should I wait before I start splitting the wood? In addition to the water oaks, I'll have hackberry and Black Tupelo.

      Thanks!
      Diana
    • Diana, The size of your trees will be a challenge for the 4 Ton model. I suggest going with the 7 Ton splitter since it is WAY more powerful. The 4 Ton is well suited for smaller trees under 12" diameter. As far as how long you should wait; split them right away and stack the firewood so it cures nicely. I've never split hackberry or Black Tupelo so I can't really comment on how tough those are. Here in Michigan we don't have that variety. ...Robert

    • I own a woodeze 4ton splitter from Northline Express. I have used it over a year splitting all types of logs. Works very well until recently. It seemed like it was loosing pressure, until finally it would advance the log up to the splitting blade but had so little pressure it would stop. I removed a cap that had a spring under it, and I assumed it was the relief valve. A small piece of metal caught in spring fell out, looked like something had broken off inside. I downloaded manual from Northline site and shows a complete parts breakdown with numbers but no parts list that corresponds with numbers on list. Does anyone know if the parts in the parts breakdown diagram are available for reorder. Northline's site does not list any parts for the pump or relief valve
