The Medallion Stovetop Thermometer incorporates pure gold markings on elegant black porcelain enamel, a most stylish design. Versatile as well - can be used on stove, fireplace insert, or stovepipe - and as a catalytic indicator when a combustor isn't accessible with a probe thermometer. High-temp coil up to 800° Fahrenheit and markings to indicate surface temperature ranges suitable for cooking. Inner dial permits calculation of BTU's per hour heat output.

What I was looking for

Indicator is easy to see in dim light. Makes sense to me to have an open groove (for indicator movement) which minimizes heat buildup underneath for stove-top applications (as opposed to solid face with 'clock style' indicator).
