CHIMNEY PIPE BRAND INFORMATION
DuraVent® DuraPlus® Chimney Pipe
DuraPlus Chimney Pipe is a all fuel chimney and will work with wood stoves, furnaces, boilers, water heaters, ranges and more! All fuel means it can burn wood, gas, oil and coal. This is a high temp chimney system and is designed to stay cool on the outside, to provide a hot draft on the inside, to boost stove efficiency, and to provide for a fire-safe design that protects both the chimney and the building. Triple-wall refers to the 3 different layers of the pipe where you have your inner layer, your intermediate layer in-between and your exterior layer of the pipe. The insulation blanket is housed between the inner layer and the intermediate layer. This triple-wall chimney features two insulating layers (ceramic blanket, plus air space). The ceramic blanket insulation is held securely in position, eliminating hot spots common with loose-fill type insulations. Triple wall chimney pipe systems can also be referred to as air cooled chimneys.
Between the intermediate layer and the exterior layer is air space which allows air to flow through, cool the pipe and keep the pipe at a proper temperature. The inner layer is always stainless steel construction, the middle layer is always going to be aluminized steel, and then you have the option to choose from either galvanized steel or stainless steel for the outer layer. Now why would you have these two options between galvanized and stainless steel? You should know that you can run the galvanized steel through the entire interior of the house but when you transition to outside of the house or structure you will want to use stainless steel. Both of these will twist lock together to create a solid fit and there is a savings between galvanized verses stainless steel but you want to specify the uses of these based on your installation rather than trying to save a few bucks.
Duraplus was manufactured with safety in mind. In the event of a creosote fire, the compressible blanket insulation permits the chimney liner to expand outwardly in a radial direction. This type of chimney pipe is also referred to as Class A Chimney Pipe and High Temp Chimney Pipe. Designed for normal, continuous operation at 1000°F flue gas temperatures, DuraPlus is subjected to rigorous and stringent HT requirements of the UL standard, including one hour at 1400°F, plus three ten minute chimney fire tests at 2100°F.
When installing this chimney pipe you must be sure to have at minimum 2" between the pipe and combustibles for clearance.
DuraVent® DuraTech® Chimney Pipe
DuraVent DuraTech Chimney Pipe is our opinion is the most versatile chimney system on the market today. It is a double-wall, all fuel, class A and high temperature chimney system that we offer in 5 inches up to 24 inches. It can even be used in a factory built zero clearance fireplace installation. It is also the best option for Mobile Home installations and is also referred to as Soild Packed Chimney Pipe. DuraTech has a 430 Stainless Steel inner liner and Thermal Tech blanket insulation which is encased between dual walls, making it the optimum in safety and performance. It keeps the outer wall of the chimney cool, while ensuring high flue gas temperatures for optimum draft performance.
If you are a installer, the DuraTech is so nice to work with because it has a 2 inch clearance to combustibles which is pretty standard but what is really great about it is that is has a 1 inch thick wall making it sleek and slender enough to install on 16" on center studs and joists. The Triple-Wall is much thicker with the additional layer so not as convenient as DuraTech's design for this. So when you are going through the wall or going through the ceiling you can instead of having to box that wall or joist in and expand the size to accommodate for that triple-wall pipe the DuraTech double-wall pipe can typically go right through those joists. This will mean less time in the attic and less time modifying your home structure.
The inner wall is 20% thicker than competitive chimneys for an extra margin of safety. When you are burning at high temperatures that 20% difference is a lot and having a higher quality pipe is important! Think of your chimney as being attacked by creosote and it is constantly being hit when in use, it is a breathing component to your household or business and having that additional thickness in your pipe will allow it to sustain in these elements and conditions. Designed for normal, continuous operation at 1000°F flue gas temperatures, DuraTech is subjected to rigorous and stringent high temperature requirements of the UL standard, including one hour at 1400°F, plus three ten-minute chimney fire test at 2100°F.
Another great feature is that no locking bands or mechanical fasteners are required. It has a twist-lock connection, which most high temperature pipes have however, DuraTech is rated so you don't have to install locking bands. No locking bands means less cost and less time spent securing your pipe installation. For tight installations, a Reduced Clearance Square Ceiling Support Box is available (6" diameter DuraTech only).
Duratech also has a huge selection of components that can be used to aid the success of your chimney installation such as a snow splitter, which will prevent snow pile up onto your chimney which can cause it damage. They will solve any problem that you have as a installer with the incredible range of products to provide the most versatile installations. Another great component that they have is a adjustable chimney pipe section to insure you have the right fit even if you had measured incorrectly. Let's say you're off by 4 inches and the smallest length you can get is 6 inches, this is where you would use the adjustable pipe section without having to replan you're entire installation. DuraTech is also our #1 selling brand and a customer favorite at Northline Express.
Shasta Vent™ Chimney Pipe
Shasta Vent Inc is proud to offer its All-Fuel HT Chimney system to the residential and building heating appliance market. Sold in Europe for years, and now offered in America, Shasta Vent All-Fuel HT Chimney is ETL Listed by Intertek to the HT requirements of the UL 103 standard. Shasta Vent's All-Fuel HT Chimney meets the safety and performance requirements needed by today's high-efficiency appliances. This double wall chimney system is available in 6 inch and 8 inch diameters.
There are four advantages to installing the Shasta Vent Chimney Pipe. The first is the material advantage which is 304 stainless steel on the inner and outer walls which provides better resistance to corrosion damage. The chimney sections are also lighter in weight which makes them easier to carry and easier to install especially when working on roofs and ladders. It also has a high temp ceramic blanket insulation which is lighter than a mineral wool insulation blanket.
The second advantage is the construction advantage, Shasta Vent pipe lengths have laser welded seams on both the inner and outer walls. This provides a better appearance and less chance for buckling at the seams. Each section has a twist lock connection and have a locking band included making the installation easy as well as secure. Normally you would have to pursue locking bands separately if you wanted to have that extra security. The locking bands are also designed with a quick clamp lock instead of having to use a screw and wingnut to secure the band.
The third advantage is the component advantage. Along with the locking bands, Shasta Vent offers a adjustable chimney pipe length that can go from 11 inches to 20 inches. The Tee Supports also come with a 8 inch pipe section rather than having to purchase that pipe in addition to the tee. The elbow can be installed and rotate 360 degrees without having to move them and get them installed right the first time.
The fourth and final advantage is the COST ADVANTAGE! Shasta Vent was created with the competitors price in mind and designed to provide a high quality product at a lower price!
Let's recap....Shasta Vent All-Fuel HT Chimney is a double wall, solid-filled residential chimney featuring .020" type 304 Stainless Steel inner and outer walls with a 2" clearance to combustibles. All-Fuel HT Chimney also features precision engineered twist-lock end rings and quick and easy Locking Bands. The high-temperature ceramic blanket insulation is encased between stainless steel walls to maintain a strong draft, while maintaining a relatively cooler temperature on the exterior wall. This All-Fuel HT Chimney is also backed by a Limited Lifetime Warranty!

CHIMNEY PIPE & STOVE PIPE Q&A
The easiest way to start is to go to our Chimney Pipe Installation Guide, but first we'll answer some common questions.
Q: What type of vent pipe do I need for a wood burning stove or gas fireplace? Interior? Exterior? Insulated?
A: Always check local building codes and environmental regulations before starting a project like this. Being familiar with your area's building codes can point you in the right direction when deciding which components are right for your install and appliance. Certain area's building codes may even require you to update your appliance or use a specific fuel.
1. Start first by determining what type of chimney pipe your appliance requires. This information can be found in your appliance's instruction manual. The manual will remove any guess work since there are several types of chimneys. For instance, Class A chimney pipe is for wood, coal, and most other fuels however, it may not be required for your gas appliance or pellet appliance. Pellet vent is for pellet burning appliances or corn burners. Direct-vent chimney is for a direct-vent gas appliance. Bottom Line- Read your instruction manual to see what type of chimney is required for your appliance.
2. Determine the layout or installation type that is applicable for your home. For Class A chimney pipe, a straight up thru-the-ceiling installation is the most popular, the least expensive, and provides the best draft but is not always an option.
Q: Should I install my pipe vertically or horizontally through a wall and then up? Wood stove pipe through the wall or roof?
A: Run your chimney pipe vertically if you have that option, it will be considerably less expensive and easier to maintain given there are no elbows to collect soot and debris. Chimney pipe that is mostly outside as is the case with a thru-the-wall installation will tend to stay cooler and may have less draft or downdraft problems than a chimney that goes straight up.
For more on this check out our article, Chimney Installation Types.
3. Next, determine the size of the chimney pipe needed. Never go smaller than what is required, or you risk having smoke or gasses backing up or in other words a poor draft.
Please Note: All Stove & Chimney Pipe is chosen and classified by the inside diameter. If your flue has a 6" Inside Diameter you will choose from the 6" Stove and Chimney Pipe categories.
There are different requirements for the US or Canada in some cases which we point out based on the type of chimney pipe.
4. Once you determine the above requirements you will need to choose a manufacturer and brand of chimney pipe (many manufacturers offer several brands within a type). Although several brands are available, we recommend Dura-Vent DuraTech chimney pipe for most new installations due to their reputation, warranty, product offering, availability, and price. Visit our Class-A Chimney Pipe section for further recommendations.
Q: I need more class A chimney pipe brand XYZ. Can I use any other brand of chimney pipe instead?
A: No. Every manufacturer of class A chimney pipe uses their own methods to secure the pipe together so one brand most likely will not connect together correctly with another brand of chimney pipe and could be dangerous due to a poor fit as it could come apart or leak creosote, smoke, or gasses. A complete system should consist entirely of the same brand.
Q: What is the difference between stove pipe and chimney pipe? What is stove pipe made of?
A: Many confuse the terms. Stove pipe is usually painted black galvanized steel and is used in the interior on the home until you transition through a wall or ceiling then class A chimney pipe is used thereon. Stove pipe, black pipe, single wall pipe all refers to the same thing. Chimney pipe, class A pipe, triple-wall pipe, insulated pipe all refers to class A chimney pipe. Double-wall pipe could be associated with either double-wall black pipe like DVL or double-wall chimney pipe like DuraTech, ShastaVent, or Selkirk.
Q: Can I just run single wall black pipe all the way up? Should wood stove pipe be single or double wall?
A: No, you must transition to Class A chimney pipe at the ceiling or wall. This goes for either single or double wall stove pipe.
Q: I’ve seen people use black pipe for the entire wood stove chimney pipe installation. I’d like to save money but is this safe?
A: Absolutely not! Black stove pipe is NOT chimney pipe and should only be used up to the point of penetrating the ceiling or wall. From that point on class A chimney pipe is required. Black single wall stove pipe has a clearance to combustibles of 18” (double-wall black pipe has a clearance of 6") whereas class A chimney pipe is generally 2”. Stove pipe used outside will run much cooler flue temperatures than class A chimney pipe and will potentially build up creosote quite rapidly increasing the chance of a chimney fire. There a no safe way to use black stove pipe for the entire chimney pipe system so ask yourself…Is saving some money worth me or my family’s life and home worth the risk?
Never substitute single wall stove pipe for class A chimney pipe. Wood stove pipe is for the interior part of your installation, then use class A chimney pipe once you penetrate a wall or ceiling for the exterior.

Chimney Brushes are designed to keep your chimney flue free from creosote buildup and safe from chimney fires. A chimney fire can ruin a chimney; or worse, catch your home on fire! Regular cleaning with an inexpensive chimney brush can eliminate the worry of chimney fires. Liquid or powdered creosote remover can also reduce dangerous creosote deposits making it easier to clean your chimney. Use these provided links and learn how to clean your chimney and how to choose a chimney brush.
Chimney Caps
A chimney cap is essentially a chimney cover that serves several imperative purposes. Capping a chimney helps prevent water damage and other destruction to your chimney and fireplace from harsh weather, such as rain and snow. It can also drastically reduce the risk of house fires or even wildfires by preventing sparks from escaping out through your chimney.
Chimney caps also save you money. They are placed on the top of the chimney, on the exterior. When your fireplace or stove is in use, the chimney cap allows smoke and ventilation to draw properly while keeping debris like leaves and sticks from entering the chimney. These objects are flammable, but they can also be wet which creates moisture inside of the chimney which can lead to smoky fires, a rusty damper etc., or other water damage.
