First, What Is the Difference Between Chimney Pipe and Stove Pipe?

Stove pipe is typically painted black and is used in the interior of the home. It connects to the class A chimney pipe that transitions you through a wall or ceiling and thereon. Stove pipe, black pipe, single wall pipe all refers to the same thing.

Alternatively, Chimney pipe or Class A pipe is double or triple wall, stainless or galvanized steel pipe that because of its insulation, can be closer to combustibles when transitioning through a wall or ceiling. This pipe is then extended beyond the building and exhausts the smoke from the fireplace a safe distance away.

What Type of Stove Pipe Do I Need? 6 in? 8 in? DuraVent? Selkirk?

The type of stove pipe you need depends largely on the type of appliance you have. There is usually a manufacturer's recommendation which is always a good starting point. If you already have a portion of your system, you already have chimney pipe or some of the necessary stove pipe pieces for example, you need to make sure you continue with the corresponding pieces, always stay consistent with brands and size if possible. Never mix brands anywhere throughout your fireplace venting system, this ensures proper connections and effectiveness. Stove and chimney pipe is sized by the inside diameter. To find the correct size measure the inside diameter of existing pipe or flue. If your inside diameter measures 6" you need to shop for 6" stove and chimney pipe, regardless of single, double, or triple wall.

Can I use Single Wall Stove Pipe Inside? Wood Stove Pipe Single or Double Wall (Insulated)?

Yes, single wall stove pipe can be used indoors, just make sure you have accounted for the proper clearances. Single wall stove pipe requires at least an 18" clearance to combustibles, double wall stove pipe requires at least a 6" clearance to combustibles. Stove pipe in general is not for use outdoors under any circumstances when venting a heating appliance.

How to put Stove Pipe Together - Installation

This again is somewhat determined by the brand of the stove pipe as the pipe's gauge and the way they fit together varies slightly from brand to brand. The crimped end of your black stove pipe is going to go down so that condensation and creosote that runs down the inside of the pipe, stays on the inside of the pipe. The pipes should then be screwed together, even double wall, just be sure not to penetrate the inner wall. This is not only for added safety, but it's actually required by most building codes.
